The future of MechScape World

Ok below is an article I’ve been working on for the new MSW blog. It’s fairly short, but hopefully enjoyable to read!

Our dear MechScape World. What do we hope to achieve with it? What are our hopes for the future? In this article I’m going to be talking about the future of MechScape World.

From humble beginnings back in (insert start date), MSW has grown from strength to strength. We’ve also been part of Jagex’s new stance with fan sites. From phone calls, concept art, Q&A’s and exclusive in game music tracks released to us. I say that’s pretty lucky. But lets not get too excited yet, the hard work is still to come. All those guides, calculators and tools for those players. So I suppose that’s goal 1? The aim to strive and provide the best guides for players.

A great site is not everything. We need a great community for players to trade, find clans, post tips and ask questions. Again, you may think pretty obvious and easy to execute, but there definitely is a fine art to running a community. So what does make a forum great? Awesome people and staff. Lets face it, that’s what we are all here for, to talk to people! So maintaing a nice atmosphere between members is crucial if we want to provide that community feel. Management. You need passionate leaders that care about the site, want to take it forward. So aim 2, a community that cares.

Last but not least…. Fun. If you don’t enjoy being on the site and forums, something is wrong. May seem rather strange to say this, but people won’t be using the site if it’s not enjoyable.

So that’s my attempt at writing a little something. I wouldn’t really call it a plan, more of a guide to success. Hopefully you enjoyed reading this, here’s to MechScape World and a bright future!

MechScape World Blog

First off, my concert did go very well, thanks for asking!

Ok, So you may have heard I’ve been working on a blog/community newspaper type thing with TechnoBulldog. Well it’s pretty much finished, we’ve just got to check a few things with Laura and wham, it’ll be posted!I must say though I’m merely helping out and thanks should go to TechnoBulldog for most of the work.

Also installing service pack 3 for my XP laptop at the moment, but this isn’t so exciting!

I’ll be back soon, hopefully with some more news about the blog and more stuff to talk about.

See you soon!

Time off school for concert!

Hey so I’ve got a concert tomorrow with my school’s Jazz Band. Being part of this means missing lesson 3, so that’s going to be good!

I’ve been fairly busy lately with a few MSW related projects and some other websites. If you haven’t heard, I’ve been working with Alex and Darth Irule from MechScape World  to produce a scavenger hunt. A trail around the forums which involves using your brain, I know, very radical!

Reccently I joined Max in helping him to make a tutorial site for scripting languages. I agreeded to help with the terms and privacy policy but haven’t got much done.

That concludes this post. So keep checking MSW for the scavenger hunt and more great fun!

See you soon!

In-active lately

Hey, I haven’t posted for sometime and apologise! I’ve been busy with my school show which was last week and rehearsing for an upcoming concert.

I’ve also worked on some music at school over the past few weeks. I created some Egyptian/Arabian style music. The YouTube video can be found here.

So I’ll try and keep you updated, even though I know not many people check my blog!

See you soon!

Long day ahead

Hey, If you haven't heard I will be heading on a school trip tomorrow to Ypres, Belgium. Meaning I will be up at 4AM getting ready as the coach leaves at 5. Hopefully I'll get an account of the day up as I'm sure that will be a homework. :P
See you soon!

I’M BACK!!

Back from holiday. I’ll try get a better theme sorted, a few stories and perhaps a diary about my holiday.

SS Embrace

Decided to write a little MechScape fiction. If you haven’t heard about MechScape/Stellar Dawn, Check out this fan site.

Creatures rushed about, Alarms rung with extreme intensity, Sirens wailed. A missile hit the side of the ship, it shook violently, the blast ricocheted  throughout the whole ship. A fire was now building up and starting to spread around the doomed space craft. A tank of gas blew up, the whole ship was now shuddering violently. Groans and creeks were coming from all around the little Pliigi. The fire was now rapidly nearing the creature. The ship was in total chaos. Pliigi were fighting their way towards escape pods, not wanting to perish with the ship. Pliigi 5782 was among them. Although they had not been told to abandon the ship, It was clear now SS Embrace would be falling into the depths of space in a matter of minutes.

The captain stood valiantly at the controls of his ship on the flight deck. Warnings flashed around the screens creating a dazzling display. An alarm started howling. A cold, metallic voice uttered words that would scare any soul: “Oncoming missile, On track 3271.” The captain had faith in his ship, It was one of the best sailing the billions of galaxies. He reluctantly fired his last missile aiming for the Ion Engines at the base of the enemy craft. He watched the screen as the missile travelled the few short seconds towards the attacking ship. It was closing in. The Captain watched the missile read-out. It was at 0 seconds. He was now amazed by the bizarre reading telling him the projectile was turning around and heading back. True it was. He looked through the glass and there it was hurtling towards SS Embrace. His only hope was to fire one of the escape pods to stop the missile hitting the ship. Without thinking, He tapped in the commands and the pod was fired off. The captain tried to not think about whether anybody was in it. He sat back and looked out into space and realised just how beautiful it was. The stars dazzled him. The planets floated magically in infinite majesty. He was proud to have seen such beautiful things.  Another alarm suddenly came to life. It warned that the last engine providing all energy to the ship was now on it’s last legs. The captain knew this was it. He had about 5 minutes before the gravity stabilisers would fail and they’d fall into the looming black hole. He knew this was it. Bravely he gave an announcement warning that everybody should evacuate the ship with in the next two minutes. His mind was working. Calculating the time and distance. He was within range. Un-needed systems were shut down to conserve power. This would be one of the last images he saw. The beauty of space.

The last remaining Ion engine sprang to life. They were on melt down. The captain slowly punched in the course. He was doing his duty, Defending his ship and the Nations of Sector 5. SS Embrace accelerated, nearing the enemy ship. The core of the engine was on melt down. A proximity alert howled, they were within impact distance. The captain shut his eyes, as the craft slammed into the enemy ship.

Sector 5 was lit up by the crash. Sparks flew out. An amazing light flooded the galaxy. You could have only imagined the sound of the crash. Slowly, the particles of the two ships were dragged away into the black hole. It sucked them up like a hover. The name plate of the SS Embrace escaped the black hole. It drifted slowly away into the depths of space…

What could MechScape’s community be like?

Hey everybody! Decided to try my hand at a little speculative MechScape writing. It’s my first one, So please go easy on me! All constructive criticism welcome!

You arrive in Lumbridge, Just created your character. You start to think, Wow, This seems a good, free online game! You manage to find yourself to the goblins by the toll gates. Bash! You hit a few goblins and kill one. Pick up these shiny little gold coins. A player comes up to you, Gives you some free gold to get started. He shows you around and you meet some other cool people. Suddenly you start to think, Wow what a great community! If only this was true. Lets rewind and meet the real Runescape players. The ten year olds that make Runescape’s community, Well um Unique to say the least.

You arrive in Lumbridge. You’ll instantly see bots, trolls or people attacking each other. Now if you can’t stand this, You would have given up by now. But no, You decide to venture on thinking it’s just a bad server or bad time e.t.c Over you head to the goblins, By now a few people have asked you to drop your items and hit alt + f4 as it’s an “Item Duplicator.” Obviously the newbs will fall for this, But the experienced ones may carry on. By now your level 5 and decide to invest in some armour. You see a guy with some shiny steel and PM him to ask if you can buy his armour. A typical conversation will go like this:

Me: Hey,

Them: ????

Me: Mind if I buy your armour?

Them: h0w mch $?

Me: I’ll give you 5k (Lets imagine it’s worth 500GP)

Them: F*** u, i pai $50000000 for it, f ur mum, i repotd u.

So by this time you decide enough is enough, You log out and never log back in.

So why is the community like this? Well through out my time playing I’ve noticed a few groups of people or reasons for this poor community.

  1. The underage users who can’t handle being wrong or just have poor language and behaviour skills.
  2. High levels who are probably also underage that think their opinion is better and they know everything.
  3. The P2P people that expect a perfect game with no bugs. These people generally moan about everything.
  4. Spammers. This only really applies on the forums.
  5. The idiots

I’m sure there are loads more types of people, But this is all I’ll include for now.

So now to see their impact on the community. Well the underage users are just kids that are like 10 years old that can’t handle loosing. They will typically type things like:

Plx $ for me, i p0r

The kids also will get annoyed with people who are attacking the same monsters e.t.c Often resulting in cursing and nasty behaviour. So why aren’t these people banned? Well Jagex seem pretty lenient when perhaps they should start perm banning people quicker. Perhaps this would be a heavy handed way of fixing the community, but it would definitely help. The problems with these people on the forums are the same. With the poor typing, low quality of posts and begging..

Now I’ll start by saying the majority of high levels are fun players that will try and help low levels. Obviously with all communities, You have the ones that spoil the lot. Some high levels will go around boasting and just showing off. In the forums though, This is more of a problem. You will have high level F2P users saying their opinion matters more and you should listen to them e.t.c These people aren’t a huge problem, they are just arrogant and annoying.

Now for the spoilt P2P users. Once again, I’m sure the most part of the members are good, honest users that work WITH Jagex not against them. However you get the odd few who will complain about every single update. Yet they never seem to have  a better idea. They will moan, whine and may call Runescape a waste of £3 a month when the amount of content for that little a price is second to none. However these moaning members rarley visit free to play worlds, So some of us are safe!

The spammers. Don’t we despise them all. The people that flood the in game chat with rubbish or just post absolute crap on the forums for the sake of a post count meter. For me, These are the biggest causers of havoc on the forums, Which is why RSOF are often regarded as one of the worst forums out there.

For my last point I’ll deal with the idiots. They provide us with some laughs on the forums, I’ll give you that. But in game, they will walk around, Beg and ask where do I get money e.t.c

So now I’ve had a look at the people that give the Runescaping community a bad image. It’s all well and good highlighting the problems, But how does Jagex go about solving them? This is a particularly important aspect with MechScape. If, Like Runescape, it has poor community members, It will never achieve it’s full potential.

Obviously there is the easy option of banning all these people. This could take a lot of Jagex staff having to review lots of cases. Meaning more staff are needed.

I have decided to scrap this article as it seems there are enough rants about the community e.t.c

Don’t worry, I will be trying again!

The Back Streets Of London

As I stated in my last post, more stories are coming! The text I bring to you is not really a story, But more of a descriptive passage building tension and hopefully creating an image in you mind of the scenery e.t.c

I’ve got a bit of spare time now and I find myself quickly typing out a story. Generally I try and right my stories within one night rather than over a few days. This is why they are quite short. Perhaps I may create some longer texts, who knows... Anyway, Here is the latest passage. I’ve been working on, It’s called The Back Streets Of London. It’s a descriptive text for my English class which really doesn’t make any sense!

It was night. There was no moon to illuminate the streets of London. Jack quickly hurried through the back alleys around Whitechapel. There was suddenly a loud clang of metal on the ground and the sound of a cat screeching as it darted over a fence. Jack froze, His heart banged away at his chest like a drum. His eyes slowly glanced around surveying the alley. He was starting to regret the choice to stray away from the busier streets. Jack started to walk again, His feet making little noise as he strolled behind the backs of peoples houses. A light was switched on, Jack tensed and felt chills running down his spine, But carried on. He now came to a small junction. A quick look to the left made him notice a little pub. Jack heard shouting which cut through the silence of the cold November night. One of them saw him staring and yelled him, “Oi, What you lookin’ at mate?” One of them threw something at him. The glass sailed through the air, A gust of wind lifted it and it missed Jack by a few centimetres. He didn’t have to be asked twice to get moving again. A few minutes later a carriage pulled up next to him. “Get in here lad” shouted a man in black. The horses shuddered in the cold and reluctantly started moving. “I think you can guess where we are going..”

Sanctioned Alliance

Just started a new clan for MechScape. You can view the site here.

Please feel free to post an application to join our wonderful community of clan members.

That's all I have right now, Will be uploading some more stories soon.

The Pliigi Commander

“Next” Rasped the curious creature who was sitting on the chair. “What is your name?” “Norman sir” The little creature replied in a sad voice. The commander kicked him. “Stand up straight and don’t give me the puppy eyes!” Thud, another kick. Small alien like creatures were being unloaded from a metal spaceship which was about as aesthetically pleasing as a stainless steel work surface. The creatures were being dragged by tall aliens. They had tall backs which curved at around their neck. Spines protruded left right and centre from all parts of their backs. It was clear you didn’t want to mess with these guys..

“Why do you think you should join the might of my army?” His voice boomed around the dark room and broke the sound of metal chains. “I think I’m a good team player and have great skills that you need.” The commander slapped him, “You think I need you? You think I don’t have your skills? I DON’T NEED YOU!” He was screaming at the poor creature. Norman looked at him and his eyes started to water with a few drips hit the cold floor. “Ahhhh, take him away, throw him with the other Mechs.” “Yes sir.” It was a monotone response from both of the Pliigi. “Garhhh, Why do I need these Mech?!” He shouted at one of the Pliigi sergeants

. “Sir, You remember the plan? We are trying to get their trust then steal their technology. That's not going to happen with you shouting at them..”  Another slapping sound echoed through the metal hall. “I DON’T NEED PEOPLE TELLING ME THAT I’M WRONG!" WE’LL JUST POINT A RAY GUN TO THEIR HEARD AND ASK FOR THE BLOODY TECHNOLOGY!” Again the hall went silent as the commander was shouting. “Just get me some water.” His voice was raspy and that came of no surprise to the Pliigi workers!

Meanwhile below deck a creature was throbbing, Throwing his tentacles around. “I’m sorry sir, The process won’t go any faster.” The little short Mech replied. The creature wasn’t taking any of that, It threw it’s tentacles around madly. Another Mech was brought down from the deck. “Sir we have another one for you, He passed the tests in flying colours.” “Excellent, I’m just trying to sort out something with the General so give us a minute.” The mech looked around but was suddenly jerked away and started being dragged again. After about 5 minutes of passing various machines they stopped at a pit. He looked down and saw a huge ball of lava. “I’m sorry, We don’t need you any more Gordon.”

If only the sun rose… (Part 1)

As promised in my last diary entry there would be a few stories to come! Here is the first of them. Take a guess at what you think It’s about, I don’t think you will predict correctly! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed writing and planning it. Well here it goes!

David was an average person. He was a year nine at school in the UK. David was a bad sleeper, He often dreamt illusions that would sometimes come true. It was raining outside. The rain pounded the dull glass of his room. David lived in an average house down an average street. It was night. From outside the house there was a faint light from his room. David was typing away frantically trying to finish coursework that was due in tomorrow. He decided to call it a night and glanced around to his alarm clock. It was set for 5:30AM. He clambered into his bed and settled in. The red L.E.D’s from the clock lit up the dull room. The rain continued to pound angrily at the window. David felt un-eased. He sensed something was wrong but couldn’t put is finger on it. He shrugged it off and started to doze off.

Outside people were gathering silently in cloaks. They looked around and then saw the final member strolling towards them. If you were there it would have certainly been eerie. They glanced cautiously around making sure nobody was awake or watching. The cloaks were pulled tightly over their faces, It was clear they didn’t want to be seen. One pulled out a sheaf of papers and handed them round. Nobody talked, Nobody moved. Their heads just stayed bowed as they glanced at the papers. One must have have thought how are they communicating? This street that was so full of life at day had a completely different side. Then out of nowhere, A flash. No noise just a bright light filled the street. Once the light had faded it was clear to see they had gone. Vanished.

David woke up. He felt slightly dazed and felt strange. He glanced around towards his alarm clock and pressed the button to light up the display. 3:21 AM. Then just as strange as the first flash, another. This time the cloaked figures were in his room, Not the street.

Upcoming Stories & Diary Entry

Dear readers, It's been a while since my last post, I do apologise. However I have been drowned in other stuff. Things like homework, MechScape World related stuff, School music bands & writing a few stories. Not a lot to update you on really, But just thought I'd let you know I am still alive. I've got my schools open evening coming up. This is an evening where prospective parents can come in and view the school. So me and my friend will be performing there so got some practice to do :) Since my last post I've been working on a few stories, Sadly none are yet at the finished stage. So the fans that love my work will have to wait a little longer. Here I will just say soon and generate some mystery. A bit like what Jagex do with MechScape. Anyway, as I said I'd also been doing MechScape World stuff. Just starting up the SOTW there and thinking through a few other ideas. If you are a reader that has not come from MSW then let me explain all about it.... http://wwww.mechscapeworld.com There's your explanation! It's a fan site for the upcoming game "MechScape" by Jagex who make Runescape, One of the largest MMO's on the planet. That's all from me. Check back soon for my stories and my diary accounts. Sorry this post has been a little bland, Not much for me to say. Anyways, See you soon, Keep reading!

I now have created a twitter page.

Feel free to follow me e.t.c, I`m just getting started so not much on there.

Here is the link!

Gothic Story

So feeling a little bored, I decided to whip up a quick gothic/horror story. It is pretty short, and I`m not the best writer. Please comment and notify me of any typos.

The waves rolled in they crashed the stony beach of Stoeaway Cove. The wind howled around the girl as she stood there looking over the sea. It swirled, rippled and rose to cause foam leaping from the waves and being swept by the wind to the girls face. She looked at her watch, He was late. As usual. Beth didn't`t like the place. Like all places they had met it was eerie. The wind was howling and lighting illuminated the beach. There was another flash. She was looking down the beach. Beth thought she made out a figure, a cloaked one. This was the last place she wanted to be. Her clothes were soaked through, clinging to her like they were afraid of the night too! Then out of nowhere, the sound of a recording being turned on. There was crackles, Then Glen Miller came on with Moonlight Serenade. She whirled around. Beth made out a faint light about 500meters down the beach. It looked like a house. As soundly as the music started, a high pitch scream cut through the night. She made out the black hooded figure leaving the house. Beth feared the worse. She now had the urge to scream. However, She could sense somebody behind her. Beth heard the steps get closer and closer. She saw from the reflection in the water who was behind. Now she knew it was all over…

This work may be copied around, but please link to this blog stating Thomas Holmes as the original author.

Ok so lets kick things of by telling you a little about myself:

I`m Thomas Holmes. I`m 14 and live in the busy city of London.
My main intrests are musical ones. I play around 5 instruments and enjoy most music.
The internet means a lot to me. This blog :P, Forums, Homework help and of course games.

I know that doesn`t tell you much about me, But feel free to post questions and I`ll make a Q&A post sometime.

Anyways my day so far...

Well I woke up about 9:30, I had a little ceral and watched some TV till like 10AM.
Got dressed and played Monopoly with my brother. He has just got a new edition with some electronic banking. It`s sad to see the paper money go, But oh well!!

After that I did some skype calls to freinds and surfed the net visiting a few of my forums.
Headed out about 2PM after lunch to enjoy some of the English weather. Summer is almost gone, So gotta make the most of it! After some football there I came back. Watched some more TV. And after all these years of gathering dust, I fired up my old Max data laptop. It`s working great, except Max data has gone bust and there is no drivers or support lol.
The time is now 6PM and I`ve created my blog. I expect I`ll watch a movie tonight and maybe go on the computer for a little more tonight.

Got school on tuesday, Which is mixed feelings for me :P
